We sat down with Cindy Williams, Retail Business Development Manager from The Look Company to find out some details and takeaways about the winter market in anticipation of future furniture shows.

## **What was your impression of this year’s winter Las Vegas Furniture Market?**

Overall, it was very positive and optimistic. The furniture and mattress industry is a very close knit community. It was lovely to see everyone, network, catch up with colleagues and get back to business! During the last couple of years, the demand for new home furnishings has risen significantly. As an industry it’s been challenging to meet that demand while navigating lockdowns and supply chain inconsistencies. Compared to the last couple of shows, this year’s show attendance was much closer to pre-pandemic levels. It was a great opportunity to view new product innovations, new companies entering the marketplace as well as to find out what everyone has been up to in person. It was very exciting!

## **What are some showroom design trends you’re seeing for furniture and mattress retailers at the Las Vegas Furniture Show?**

Throughout the market this year, there were a couple of showroom design trends that were very important and stood out. What I noticed were bright, engaging graphics and spacious layouts as well as design flexibility in terms of updating the look and feel of the showrooms.

The most impactful showrooms were brightly lit with a combination of backlit graphics and accent lighting. They were colorful and engaging, drawing in potential buyers. Because I’ve been to a few shows, I’ve seen the best and I’ve seen the not so great showrooms. The showrooms that get the most traffic invest in visually engaging bright designs. I’m happy to say that The Look Company was a part of “lighting up” several of the furniture and mattress showrooms at market and helping those exhibitors see an exponential increase in showroom traffic!

## **Which TLC products make the most impact in a furniture showroom?**

Even though it’s not necessarily a product in itself, I have to give a shout-out to the exceptional quality of [dye sublimated prints](https://thelookcompany.com/blog/dye-sublimation-fabric-printing). There was such positive feedback from visitors who couldn’t believe the print quality, and that the printed substrate was fabric! There was one application where you couldn’t tell it was fabric at all, it looked just like real wood grain! Sometimes my customers give me the eye roll because I can’t stop talking about it!

## **What are some takeaways from the market for furniture and mattress retailers?**

New graphics help to invigorate support for the team and drive ticket and merchandise sales. But what happens when the stands are silent in the off-season? ## Multi-purpose Stadiums in the USA

What if every day could be game day? [Multi-purpose stadiums](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-purpose_stadium) are not a new concept, with the majority of these types of venues being built in the U.S. primarily during the 1960s and 1970s to accommodate the two most common and popular sports - American football and baseball. 

Unfortunately, even though the intention was to lower or offset operational costs, the size and shape of the fields were vastly different, one being a diamond (baseball) and the other a long rectangle (football). Often seating areas would have to be added or taken away to change the shape of the field. The laborious changeovers led to the phasing out of multi-purpose stadiums for professional football and baseball by the 1990s. 

Although there was a phase-out of multi-purpose stadiums designed to house the MLB and NFL, there was still interest in using a single-use venue for other types of events. Conferences, concerts, or even NCAA competitions such as the Final Four found themselves at a stadium where the primary team is football. The need to utilize the high-capacity facilities drove modern stadium designs to include architectural features such as retractable or domed roofs, or transformational pitches to accommodate community activities and large events year-round.

## Multi-purpose Stadiums in Canada

In Canada, multi-use stadiums remain commonplace. Not just for baseball and football, but other sports, teams, competitions, tournaments, and events. The Rogers Center (SkyDome), which opened in 1989, is the first sports facility to have a fully retractable motorized roof. Historically it has been used for soccer, basketball, the Canadian Football League, and the National Football League, even though nowadays it’s just the primary home field for the Toronto Bluejays baseball team. 

BC Place in Vancouver opened in 1983 with the world’s largest air-supported dome. It was retrofitted with a retractable roof in 2010, and remains the home turf to the CFL’s BC Lions, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (MLS), the annual Canada Sevens tournament (Rugby), the 2010 Winter Olympics as well as the championship game of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Several of the CFL stadiums are often used for alternative sporting events. Mosaic Stadium in Regina is an open-air outdoor stadium that has been transformed into the NHL Heritage Classic in 2019. Additionally, other outdoor venues in Canada are host to the NHL Outdoor Games such as the NHL 100 Classic, and the Centennial Classic. In these cases, the stadium bowls of the venue were outfitted with specialty graphics outside of their main team branding.  
  
Most recently in 2021, the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton was repurposed for a FIFA World Cup qualifying match between Canada and the Mexican national soccer team.

## Multiple Teams & Sports, One Field

Because the most popular sports in Canada are hockey and Canadian football, there are two main types of sports venues, indoor and open-air or outdoor. Outdoor venues across Canada have been versatile in adapting to other teams or specialty tournaments. For example, with the implementation of the [Canadian Premier League](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Premier_League) (soccer) in 2019, some outdoor venues were modified to be able to coordinate a second branded team until the new soccer teams could build their own stadiums.

At Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, the stadium was challenged with running two professional sports teams during the same season. As a result, The Look Company created a system to change out the graphics of the stadium to efficiently switch from football to soccer.

Using custom polywoven with blockout fabric prints, the solution utilized the existing extrusions on the field of play. Fabric prints are installed over the existing graphics and zip-tied off for Forge FC games and then removed and stored on transportable rollers. Because the multi-use stadium capacity is 28,218 for TiCats games, custom printed mesh seat covers were created for specific sections of the stadium for a more intimate home game setting for the Forge FC.

For colleges and universities looking to utilize their fields for other purposes, a multi-use stadium approach is ideal, especially for NCAA Division II and III schools. Both the construction and maintenance of a large stadium that sits empty 85% of the year, doesn’t make much budgetary sense. Multi-purpose stadiums contribute an integral source of revenue throughout the year to help offset operational costs whether for sports, leisure or entertainment.

## What is Dye Sublimation Printing?

Dye sublimation is a two-stage fabric printing process of digitally dye printing synthetic substrate with heat activated dyes and then heat curing the printed substrate to achieve a vibrant, and detailed printed image. The process is simple and quick compared to other analog printing techniques such as screen printing and traditional offset printing.

Sublimation inks react with heat and pressure to transform the ink into a gaseous state. When heat is applied, the pores of the substrate open up, allowing the gaseous dye to flow into the open pores. As the substrate cools, its pores close, permanently locking the inks into the fabric. The process results in continuous tones of vivid, photographic color, as the inks in their gaseous state enter into the substrates pores rather than being deposited on the surface. They are two primary methods of dye-sublimation printing, transfer printing and direct dye printing.

## Transfer Printing

The printer prints on transfer paper that has a coating designed to hold and then, under heat and pressure in a heat press or calendar, releases the printed image. When the transfer paper is brought into contact with the fabric in a heat press, the ink embedded in the paper is converted to a gas and penetrates directly into the fibers of the substrate.

## Direct Dye Printing

Direct dye printing eliminates the need for transfer paper as inks are printed directly onto the coated substrate. Printed fabrics still need to be run through a calendar for the sublimation process to fix the dye to the fabric. 

## What are the Differences Between Transfer and Direct Dye Printing?

*   Direct dye printing penetrates further into the fabric allowing color to pass through to the reverse side.
    
*   Transfer dye printing inks sit on top of the fabric resulting in see through threads when fabric is stretched. Ghosting is common in lightboxes.
    
*   Direct dye printing is more durable as it changes the color of the thread.
    
*   Direct dye printing produces vivid images on fabric substrates
    
*   Transfer dye printing is faster than direct dye printing

## Fabric lightboxes: How we evoked a sense of the country within a modern retail space

Backlit panels and printed fabrics running seamlessly from walls to the ceiling turned the store into a modern canvas that painted a picture of an environment that heightened the product's brand value.

Working directly with the architects, the store design team, and the team at Hunter Boots, we created custom lightbox solutions with dye sublimation fabric prints for vibrant and rich color. How Graphic Displays Elevate the Fan Experience in Stadiums and Sports Fields

The COVID-19 pandemic didn’t change the way we shop—we already shopped online—but it accelerated how comfortable we are with ecommerce and it put pressure on web-based retail to improve user experience (UX) both online and offline. Smaller retailers adopted a hybrid in-store/eCommerce model: Retail stores could remain open or those locations could be repurposed into fulfillment centers for online orders.

## The Shift From Traditional Commerce To Ecommerce

In 2020, total retail sales in Canada hit record declines, dropping by 1.5% overall. Brick-and-mortar stores were hit hardest as retail ecommerce sales reached a record $3.9 billion in May, a [110.8% increase](https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/45-28-0001/2020001/article/00064-eng.htm) compared to May 2019. In the United States, total retail sales increased in 2020 by 6.9%, hitting $4.04 trillion in 2020. Ecommerce sales represented $861.12 billion of the overall expenditure, [up 44%](https://www.digitalcommerce360.com/article/us-ecommerce-sales/) from 2019.

Ecommerce order portals could handle this influx of orders, but the supply chain for order delivery was configured for old projections; shipping networks struggled to keep up and backend fulfillment was bottlenecked. Shipping delays were even more pronounced because of social distancing protocols. Retail chains struggled to deliver their goods on time. [Canada Post reported](https://globalnews.ca/news/7048741/coronavirus-canada-post-delay/) shipping parcels at record levels—even well into June of 2020—the mail system could not keep up with customer demand.

What was the best solution to ease postal pressure?

Retailers explored a new shipping model where retail stores doubled as micro-fulfillment centers (MFCs)—and that pivot paid off.

## What is a Micro-Fulfillment Center?

Nathan Schmies, Vice President of supply chain operations at Hub Group [shared his definition with Supply Chain Dive](https://www.supplychaindive.com/news/supply-chain-micro-fulfillment-grocery-last-mile/589848/): Micro-fulfillment refers to “a hybrid model that uses smaller facilities that are much closer to consumers.”

This has also been referred to as “last mile delivery.” Logistics company DHL describes MFCs as a concept that places small-scale warehouse facilities in accessible, urban locations that are close to the end-consumer—in that last mile.

Think of MFCs as Airbnb's for shipping logistics.

Tiny storage spaces rent out to retailers as needed (or convert from a retail store to a distribution center). This makes consumers happy in two ways:

1.  Parcels arrive fast (in 2-3 days)
    
2.  Customers could pick up their parcels at an MFC the same day.
    

Both make it easier for retailers to scale and offer fast, efficient, cost-effective home delivery. But it is option #2 that **presents a new branding opportunity in 2021.** BOPIS (buy online pick up in-store) is a new venue to communicate value and customer-focused branding impact. Curbside pickup is even more convenient than next-day shipping. As Official Look Partner for the ANOC World Beach Games Qatar 2019, this event branding project for the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) combined over 28,600 square meters of branding elements.  It covered 34, 15 meter tall light towers and a vast mix of perimeter advertising, hoarding and event signage built around a total of 213 AutoCAD drawings. The fabric graphics on this project were direct printed and dye sublimated with proprietary fabric coatings to achieve the vibrant final output. Additionally, 110 buses were branded and over 300 square meters of flag fabric were printed and installed across the city. Bronze Winner: Walmart Canada Displays

This store branding project for Walmart Canada involved the production of over 850 stretch fabric frames. Utilizing our modular extrusion system, we were able to configure custom display elements such as self check-out areas.
